Sandra Pratt
Sandra Pratt is an American painter who anchors her artistic vision in landscape, cityscape, and coastal painting. Her impressionist style is infused with boldness, spontaneity, and emotion, her every knife stroke strives to capture reality through the lens of her imagination and personal feelings. It is her unique experiences that enable her to bring seemingly ordinary scenes to life on canvas by employing a plethora of unconventional painting techniques. My approach to making art is guided by intuition and intense observation of the subject. The act of painting releases a stream of consciousness and creative energy that reveals my view of reality. The tension between visual perception and engaging with the paint itself guides my process. Painting leaves a record of my experience. It is my most poignant and genuine means of expression. The paintings explore the landscape of the psyche – the place where the conscious and unconscious meet. In her work Sandra addresses the delusions of order and control that human beings cling to as we navigate the fundamental unpredictability of reality and sense our own finiteness in the immensity of time and nature. The existential and the personal—the exterior and the interior—are intertwined in Sandra’s paintings. Throughout all her work there is an appreciation for the fragility of life and at the same time our boundless capacity to feel hope. She sees her work as an opportunity to call attention to our commonalities by sharing deeply personal experiences that are, at the same time, universal experiences. Sandra’s painting process reflects the constant push and pull between order and chaos. By using palette knife techniques and scraping to break up the still wet paint, she opens up the possibility of accidental forms and marks. She responds to those results, putting a little of her own order back into the chaos. This process continues over several layers, resulting in images that hover between figuration and abstraction. Her works are in private collections in Europe (Italy, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Ireland, Cyprus, Russia, UK), the Americas (US, Canada, Trinidad) and Australia.
